Maid of honor speech: how to write it, with sample lines
By the speechwriters.ai editorial team · Last updated
A simple five-part structure for a maid of honor speech, sample lines you can adapt, and the mistakes that make guests cringe.
When does the maid of honor speak?
At most American receptions the toasts happen after the couple's entrance or during dinner. The usual order is the host (often the father of the bride), then the maid of honor and the best man, though which of the two goes first varies. Check with the couple and the DJ or emcee so you know your cue.
A five-part structure (3–5 minutes)
- Who you are. One line on how you know the bride. "For anyone I haven't met, I'm Jess, and I've been Sarah's best friend since we were assigned the same locker in seventh grade."
- A story that shows who she is. Pick one specific moment, not a list of adjectives. The best stories show a quality: loyalty, stubbornness, generosity.
- The couple. When did you know this person was different? What changed in her? "The first time she talked about Mike, she didn't mention his job or his car. She said he'd remembered her grandmother's name."
- A sincere moment. Thirty seconds, said plainly, about what she means to you.
- The toast. Ask everyone to raise a glass and name the toast clearly: "To Sarah and Mike."
Sample lines to adapt
- "I've been practicing this speech for weeks, mostly in the car, so if you see me at a red light talking to myself, now you know why."
- "Sarah has been planning her life with a color-coded spreadsheet since 2009. Mike is the first thing on it she didn't see coming."
- "Mike, she will always pick the restaurant. Accept this now."
What to avoid
- Bachelorette party stories. What happened in Nashville stays in Nashville.
- Exes, even as a joke.
- In-jokes only your friend group gets. If it needs explaining, cut it.
- Talking only about yourself and the bride. The groom should feel welcomed too.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a maid of honor speech be?
Three to five minutes, or roughly 400–650 words. Shorter is almost always better at a reception.
Do the maid of honor and best man give a joint toast?
Some do, and it can work well if you rehearse together. Most give separate toasts, so compare notes so you don't tell the same story.
Should the maid of honor read from her phone?
You can, but turn on airplane mode and raise the brightness. Printed cue cards are more reliable and look better in photos.
Can I mention the bachelorette party?
Only something any grandparent could hear. A gentle, one-line reference is fine; detailed stories aren't.
